IN THE LIGHT OF THE MOON

Last night I went walking on the land around sunset.  The sky was glowing with pink and orange flowing streaks of clouds blended with the purples and blues of the deepening darkness.  I turned around to face the other horizon and there was the Full Moon rising in the east.  

This unexpected encounter with Full Moon stopped me in my tracks.  The Moon in her fullness is extraordinary, overflowing with mystery and magic, a huge glowing circle dancing through the sky, filling the night with light.  She’s a trusted old friend, a loving companion, always there, always here, watching over.

Full Moon resonates with unhindered self-expression.  She simply isn’t hiding.  She openly shines her light, touching all life with the very essence of her glow, calling us do the same. 

Full Moon generates a time of heightened energy which invites us to be attentive to the emotions and thoughts going on inside us.  What do we really want to feel and think and share?  In the light of the Full Moon, we can take a closer look at any limited self-concepts that silence and disempower us, that tone down our natural radiance, knowingness and joy.

Full Moon invites us to explore the delights of our senses and feel the beauty of our whole being – freely claiming our truths, sharing our love, and flourishing in our natural connectedness with all life.

EVERYTHING IS ALIVE

Everything is alive.  Every grain of sand.  The sunlight.  The waves and tides in the oceans.  Each drop of water in our rivers and lakes.  

The soil is alive.  So too, the rocks.  The lizards and ants.  The clouds, coyotes and soaring winged ones.

This aliveness, the remarkable consciousness and creativity present in such diverse beings, is called the Song in the ways of Ka Ta See.  

Everything has a Song.  And everyone’s Song is unique.  Each stone.  Each individual tree.  Every person.  Each and every Song is filled with unique life purpose and passions, vast knowings, beauty and extraordinary gifts.

Have you seen this?  Have you felt this?  The Song lives inside each of us.  It is us.  And we can awaken and remember our unique Song anytime.

No Song lives in isolation.  Every Song is naturally connected with the intricate web of life.  When feeling and being our Song, we can intentionally reach out to connect with any and all other beings whether they are very nearby or far far away. 

Connecting Song to Song.  Heart to Heart.  Curiosity to Curiosity.  Respect to Respect.

No judgments.  No hiding.   No fears.  No better-thans or less-thans.  No shoulds or supposed-to-be-something-else are found in Song to Song connections.

Today our calendars say it is Earth Day.  See what it feels like to reach out to the Earth from your heart to her heart, Song to Song, Beauty to Beauty, filling yourself up with gratitude and respect for the Aliveness within you, within her, and shared between you.   

See how it feels to reach out from your Song to connect with the animals, insects, plants and people inside and around your home.  Song to Song.  Heart to Heart.  Aliveness to Aliveness.  Uniqueness to Uniqueness.  Love to Love.  

Honoring yourself, the Mother Earth, and all other beings in this way sends ripples of Song, of unconditionally loving relationship, of beauty and joy and passion into the web of life – touching everyone and everything.  It is a gift beyond measure.

So here’s to a Song-filled day…and another tomorrow…and the next and the next and the next…

MESSAGES FROM THE MICE

When I moved into my house in the fall, unbeknownst to me, I had housemates.  I discovered that mice were living here too.  The mouse family had well-established pathways behind kitchen appliances and between woodwork and plumbing pipes.  Apparently these little furry four-leggeds had staked their claim here quite some time ago.

At night, I could hear them scampering around on grand adventures.  The mice nibbled on most anything they could find.  They feasted on the food bits left out on the spirit plate.  They emptied the bowl of blue corn on my altar, stashing piles of dried kernels in secret storage places.  

I found myself spending a great deal of time mouse-proofing the house: plugging up passageways with steel wool, setting live traps, taking mice out to the arroyos, mopping up the mess – over and over and over again.  Mice are cute.  And incredibly ingenious.  And they did funny things.  But after awhile, the disruptions, distractions and unhealthy circumstances got very very old.

One morning while sorting through chewed-open supplement bottles and scrubbing down kitchen counters (again), there came a sudden realization.  I was stuck in a rut.  

Despite all the energy I spent on the same issue day after day, things weren’t really changing.  For a few sweet hours, everything appeared just fine, on the surface anyway.  Yet inevitably the old pattern would get triggered into action.  And on (and on) the cycle would go.

Was it going to be like this forever?  Trying and trying to make things better but not really getting anywhere new?  

So I asked for help.  Even though I was concerned no one would want to deal with the problem.  Even though I feared their disgust (mostly of me) when they looked under the kitchen sink and saw the dilapidated floorboards that needed to be replaced.  Yet without a flicker of judgment or even a hint of overwhelm, someone listened to my stories, took a look around, and readily agreed to help.  

While cleaning things up beneath the sink and pulling out the old wood and reaching into the dusty cobwebbed places beyond the pipes, we found tucked way way way back in a dark hidden corner a huge warm and cozy mouse nest.  

So the nest was removed.  The floorboards were rebuilt with strong and sturdy materials.  The spaces around the pipes got filled in.  And since then, not a single mouse.  

In the stillness that came without mice scampering around the house and without stress running aimlessly through my body and mind, I could hear more clearly the messages from the mice.  Here’s what the little four-leggeds so ingeniously helped me to see:  

Staying stuck in old ruts is an option.  But it’s really not the only choice.

It’s okay to ask for help.

To get untangled from disruptive patterns which compromise happiness and health, it takes courage and willingness to look beneath the surface and dig through the layers and take things apart and find the hidden places way way back in dark corners which hold the key to understanding why the persistent old patterns keep coming back and what it is that’s keeping them alive.

And with these discoveries, however uncomfortable at first, we crack open the doorway for change.  Because we’ve seen now first-hand what had been hidden before.  So we can choose do something about it.  New possibilities and creative remedies come to light when we expand our view, opening our eyes and minds and hearts, accepting what currently exists and even the history and all that’s still unknown without condemnation, judgment or fear.  

So we clean up the clutter.  Sweep out the old.  Remove attachments, entanglements and messy remnants from the past, anything out-of-balance that has been.

And then we rebuild, starting on the inside, with natural resources – our true knowings, our connectedness, our clear intent.  With sustainable materials found within and around, we purposefully create a steady foundation that is authentic, has staying-power and will hold.

This is the dance of transformation.  Letting go and birthing the new.  No longer feeding disruptive patterns and allowing them to control the feeling and flow of our days.  No longer giving away our precious energy and time which enables unhealthy cycles to get triggered into action and just rampantly do their thing, no matter the consequence.

There is boundless beauty and deep respect in the creating of change that is win-win-win for everyone involved.

The mice are at home now in their natural habitat, in those wild open spaces beyond all the walls that have nothing to do with the truths of their lives.  The mice are in their element, flourishing and free.  

So are we.

“It’s beautiful!”  he exclaimed.  Smiling, he reached his arms out wide as if to embrace the ramshackle pile of wire and metal posts I had gathered up from the land around my house. 

The delighted father and his son wanted the fencing for their garden and goats.  What was being given was warmly received, just what they were looking for.

In this ordinary moment standing by my garage with people I’d just met, there was such heartfelt connection in our exchange, in the joy of having co-created a win-win-win for everyone and everything involved.  No unresolved debts.  No obligations.  Nothing happening at the expense of another.

This is the balance, the beautiful field of abundance and equity, the flowing rivers of giving and receiving that naturally nourish all life.

As we move with the earth into Spring Equinox, we are invited to explore equity and balance in our personal lives – in our inner world, our relationships with others, in the health of our bodies and minds. The balance of Equinox opens the doorway into the passionate awakenings of Spring, the dynamic birthings of new life in a new season on earth. 

Seeking and sharing balance and equity, we step into our own awakening and the passionate aliveness which roots us in the truths of who we really are.  When we allow this knowing to flourish freely in our hearts and naturally ripple out into the world, we touch others with vast new potentials and possibilities.

LETTING GO WITH LOVE

I’ve been watching songbirds get more active around their old nests in the terra cotta light fixtures on the porch.  I assumed the songbirds were returning home to roost.  However, one morning all the twigs and dried grasses were scattered around on the ground.  The birds had deliberately taken their old nest apart.

These winged ones instinctively know that every new cycle, even the passionate awakening of spring, is always joined with a letting go.  Taking things apart, undoing what has been, is a sacred task which opens space for the new.

Funny thing is, I’ve been de-nesting too.  Rearranging the space in my home.  Sorting through things, making piles to sell and give away.  Clearing away expectations and self-imposed limitations that I’ve been carrying around on the inside.  In the remembering of who I am in this here-and-now time and place, choosing how I want to live and love and think and be, all the old baggage, anything held onto out of fear, simply doesn’t belong.

While untangling the old structures and opening space to build something new, the winged ones sing, fly around, sit in tree branches, gather up food.  There’s joy in the air, curiosity about what’s to come, and such purposeful action-taking to shape a nourishing place for present and future lives.

As I go about clearing space in my home and inner world, I’m finding a rhythm to it all, like a chant joining up with the earth’s shifting seasons and following the drumbeat of my heart:  Letting go.  Letting go.  With lots of Love.  Just let it go.

As the earth moves into Spring, I’ve been witnessing another transition in the cycles of life.  My grandmother, nearing her 100th birthday, recently passed away.  In honoring her life, I’ve been feeling so aware of the lineage of grandmother – mother – daughter.  My birthing in this lifetime was seeded in my grandmother’s womb.  Grandmothers shape the generations to come.

In the letting go of her physical life on the earth, my grandmother passed on profound unspoken teachings.  Her physical health had been declining for some years.  She had dementia, increasingly moving away from her relationships with the 3-d world.  And in her last days, with heavy doses of pain medications, she was mostly in restful sleep.

Yet the vastness of her spirit, the intent of her heart, reached beyond all that to touch other people’s lives, to orchestrate healing among her family in remarkable and unexpected ways.  In her letting go, she created something new – for herself, for her children, for her grandchildren, for all life.

She showed us about the tenacity of the spirit.  About the ability to reach out energetically to weave connections and bring healing to old wounds and share love, even in our final moments, even with our final breath.  What a beautiful legacy to leave behind.

Letting go can be surrounded with Love.  With an embrace of the mystery and magic.  With trust in the birthing, in the gifts unfolding, in the sacred space for new life.

EMBODYING BEAUTY

How is it we’ve come to believe that there are some people who are beautiful and others who are not?  Does it really make sense that bathroom scales, clothing sizes and calorie counts hold the power to determine whether or not we’re worthy of love?  What drives us to spend countless hours and dollars to recolor, reshape and resize our bodies, over and over again? 

Why has the beauty of who we are become so difficult to see?

The mother earth has something to say about beauty that’s free of judgment and unburdened by fears.  Bears don’t worry about the shape of their bodies.  Dragonflies aren’t distressed by the size of their wings.  Oak trees don’t attempt to look more like the pines. Vultures aren’t hiding behind pretenses, pretending to do something other than what it is that they do.  The mother earth reveals beauty that’s filled with integrity, that celebrates rich diversity in the web of life.

Beauty sings out from the sunsets and echoes in the wind and rains down from the moon and dances in the sea and whispers on wings and howls with coyotes and weaves webs with the spiders and lingers in the scent of the sage.

Beauty calls out from the mountains and rumbles with thunder and sits quietly with the lizards and soars with the hawks and radiates from the rocks and buzzes with the bees and glistens in the shimmering dawn.

Beauty comes alive in the free, unencumbered expression of being just who we are.  Beauty is the honoring of what is, a celebration of life in all it’s magnificent, mysterious, remarkable shapes and sensations and colors and purposes and forms.

Mother Earth’s exuberance is a compelling invitation to open up to our own natural beauty.  Beauty is found in the feeling of who we are, in the essence of our aliveness, our uniqueness.  The truth about beauty is not tangled up in comparisons and competition.  No winners and losers.  No suffering or sacrifice.  Beauty just isn’t that complicated.

Beauty simply is.  And comes vibrantly alive when there’s acceptance in the air.  And openly exists in all cycles of life, in our connections with each other, in sharings of appreciation, inspiration and awe.

Remember the last time you experienced Mother Earth’s beauty?  Maybe seeing the full moon.  Smelling spring rains.  Tasting wild berries.  Breathing fresh air.  Hearing the tree frogs call in the night.

Remember how you felt?

How full of beauty you felt?

How beauty-full you felt?

Remember.  How beautiful.  You felt.

Beauty resonates within you and ripples out into the world when you honor other beings for being just who they are.

Beauty radiates out from the inside when you simply are who you are, filled with clear awareness and unconditional love.  No hiding.  No searching somewhere-out-there for an official stamp of approval. 

So next time you’re about to look in the mirror to figure out how much beauty you’ve got, just redirect your attention to how you’re feeling inside.  In any moment, any place, you can fill yourself up with the remembering of beauty.  And you’re beauty-full instantly. 

You’re beautiful.  It’s a matter of choice, of where you’re putting your attention, of what you’re allowing yourself to feel. 

Beauty thrives in acceptance and unhindered self-expression. 

Beauty comes alive when you naturally are who you are and love who you are exactly as you are, here and now.

Feeling the Beauty.  Being the Love.

GROWING LOVE FROM THE INSIDE OUT

It all starts on the inside.  Love, that is.

We’ll never really know Love if we bypass the essential seeding.  Love, real love, only comes alive when it’s rooted deep inside us, gets nourished in every cell, and is given ample space to flourish free and wild.

Unconditional love naturally grows from the inside out.

Most of us learn about love that’s conditional.  We’re loved only if and when certain expectations are met.  So we endlessly search outside ourselves for signs we’ve gained approval.  Are we measuring up?  Are we ‘good enough’ in someone else’s eyes?

We fight against our own bodies and judge other people’s lives while handing out this-thing-called-love that’s tangled up with evaluations and rules and regulations about what’s supposed to be given and what should be given back.

Conditional love is fleeting.  It’s situational.  Very slippery.  With this kind of love, we’re never really sure if we’re gonna’ get some or give some.  Maybe.  Maybe not.

Love without conditions – the boundless embrace of unconditional love – is what naturally feeds and fuels life.  Just take a look around and ask:  The trees.  The coral reefs.  The spirits and our ancestors.  The elephants, lizards and ravens.  The winds and waters, sun and moon.

Unconditional Love accepts and respects all beings and all life, loving everyone and everything just as they are, here and now. 

Unconditional Love awakens clear vision and clear heart, calling us to step out of the battles and untangle from the never-enoughs, to intentionally weave fibers of connection with caring and respect which bring healing, new perspectives and true relationship.

Love that grows from the inside out is abundant and ever-present, shared without hesitation.  Not an ounce of energy or attention ever gets spent on determining who and what is worthy of love.  We are literally In Love all the time.

Because the Love is in us, saturating our bodies, spirits and minds.  We’re made of Love and making it.  We are cherished and cherishing, adoring and adored, loving and beloved all at once.

We taste the beauty of acceptance and feel respect in our bones and share heart to heart connections with every breath we take, with every word we speak, with every emotion we choose to feel, with everyone we encounter, with each precious moment of life.

Love is right here just waiting to be found and so hungry to grow…from the inside out.

In this time on the earth so potent with change, I feel the whispers as I walk about the land:  Nestle in the stillness.  Breath in the earth.  Soak up the sun.  Shake down the seeds. 

If we seek it, we will find it for it too is seeking us ~ this spirited dance of life we’re naturally a part of.  The vibration of ancient rhythms will be carried up along our roots.  We’ll feel the hum and soon find ourselves humming along, sharing our voice, finding our rhythm, dancing on rich fertile ground. 

Nestling in the stillness.  Breathing in the earth.  Soaking up the sun.  Shaking down the seeds.

WINTER SOLSTICE: GIFTS OF THE HEART

Winter Solstice is a unique and special moment in the dynamic dance between the earth and our sun and our moon.  Winter Solstice is the longest night, the aspect in the natural cycles which generates the most hours of darkness between sunset and sunrise. This year, Winter Solstice is followed closely by the New Moon.     

In the busy-ness of the world, we so often disregard the natural rhythms of life and seasonal cycles we are so deeply immersed in and a vital part of. 

There’s a bold and beautiful invitation being naturally shared in the ways of the earth, sun and moon.  We’ll feel the calling, receive the medicines, if we reach out to connect and feel and listen to what’s happening inside us and all around.

The wintertime invites us to nestle into the quieting and focus attention inwardly.  To discover the gifts inside the stillness. To abundantly nourish our bodies, minds and spirits.  To warm our hearts and homes.

Like the seeds resting in the soils until the coming of spring, we too have inside us great knowing about who we are, about the potentials of who and what we are becoming, and the resources needed to awaken, fully blossom and grow.

The rich fertile darkness of the Solstice and the new moon cycle invite us to a joyful remembering –

of who we really are,

of what we’ve come here to do,

of unconditional love,

of our connection with all life,

of our dreams, our most beloved and genuine dreams.

The seeds of our dreams hold the blueprint for what will grow inside us, for what will be present in our everyday lives and come into existence on the planet.  It’s a sacred and powerful thing, dreaming our dreams with creative and loving intent. 

May the world within you and all around be filled with Love this Solstice season.
