GROWING LOVE FROM THE INSIDE OUT

It all starts on the inside.  Love, that is.

We’ll never really know Love if we bypass the essential seeding.  Love, real love, only comes alive when it’s rooted deep inside us, gets nourished in every cell, and is given ample space to flourish free and wild.

Unconditional love naturally grows from the inside out.

Most of us learn about love that’s conditional.  We’re loved only if and when certain expectations are met.  So we endlessly search outside ourselves for signs we’ve gained approval.  Are we measuring up?  Are we ‘good enough’ in someone else’s eyes?

We fight against our own bodies and judge other people’s lives while handing out this-thing-called-love that’s tangled up with evaluations and rules and regulations about what’s supposed to be given and what should be given back.

Conditional love is fleeting.  It’s situational.  Very slippery.  With this kind of love, we’re never really sure if we’re gonna’ get some or give some.  Maybe.  Maybe not.

Love without conditions – the boundless embrace of unconditional love – is what naturally feeds and fuels life.  Just take a look around and ask:  The trees.  The coral reefs.  The spirits and our ancestors.  The elephants, lizards and ravens.  The winds and waters, sun and moon.

Unconditional Love accepts and respects all beings and all life, loving everyone and everything just as they are, here and now. 

Unconditional Love awakens clear vision and clear heart, calling us to step out of the battles and untangle from the never-enoughs, to intentionally weave fibers of connection with caring and respect which bring healing, new perspectives and true relationship.

Love that grows from the inside out is abundant and ever-present, shared without hesitation.  Not an ounce of energy or attention ever gets spent on determining who and what is worthy of love.  We are literally In Love all the time.

Because the Love is in us, saturating our bodies, spirits and minds.  We’re made of Love and making it.  We are cherished and cherishing, adoring and adored, loving and beloved all at once.

We taste the beauty of acceptance and feel respect in our bones and share heart to heart connections with every breath we take, with every word we speak, with every emotion we choose to feel, with everyone we encounter, with each precious moment of life.

Love is right here just waiting to be found and so hungry to grow…from the inside out.

SHAKING DOWN THE SEEDS

In this time on the earth so potent with change, I feel the whispers as I walk about the land:  Nestle in the stillness.  Breath in the earth.  Soak up the sun.  Shake down the seeds. 

If we seek it, we will find it for it too is seeking us ~ this spirited dance of life we’re naturally a part of.  The vibration of ancient rhythms will be carried up along our roots.  We’ll feel the hum and soon find ourselves humming along, sharing our voice, finding our rhythm, dancing on rich fertile ground. 

Nestling in the stillness.  Breathing in the earth.  Soaking up the sun.  Shaking down the seeds.

WINTER SOLSTICE: GIFTS OF THE HEART

Winter Solstice is a unique and special moment in the dynamic dance between the earth and our sun and our moon.  Winter Solstice is the longest night, the aspect in the natural cycles which generates the most hours of darkness between sunset and sunrise. This year, Winter Solstice is followed closely by the New Moon.     

In the busy-ness of the world, we so often disregard the natural rhythms of life and seasonal cycles we are so deeply immersed in and a vital part of. 

There’s a bold and beautiful invitation being naturally shared in the ways of the earth, sun and moon.  We’ll feel the calling, receive the medicines, if we reach out to connect and feel and listen to what’s happening inside us and all around.

The wintertime invites us to nestle into the quieting and focus attention inwardly.  To discover the gifts inside the stillness. To abundantly nourish our bodies, minds and spirits.  To warm our hearts and homes.

Like the seeds resting in the soils until the coming of spring, we too have inside us great knowing about who we are, about the potentials of who and what we are becoming, and the resources needed to awaken, fully blossom and grow.

The rich fertile darkness of the Solstice and the new moon cycle invite us to a joyful remembering –

of who we really are,

of what we’ve come here to do,

of unconditional love,

of our connection with all life,

of our dreams, our most beloved and genuine dreams.

The seeds of our dreams hold the blueprint for what will grow inside us, for what will be present in our everyday lives and come into existence on the planet.  It’s a sacred and powerful thing, dreaming our dreams with creative and loving intent. 

May the world within you and all around be filled with Love this Solstice season.

WINTER BLESSINGS

We woke up this morning to a snow-covered world.  Jasmine sniffed the air and came back inside, spending a couple more hours in her bed by the woodstove.  Wise grandma dog.

With the shorter days of winter and deepening cold and dark nights, my homing instincts come into full bloom.  Yearning to be home, cozy and warm before nightfall.  Sitting by the fire, sharing tea with friends, writing, feeling the spirits, bundling up for walks guided by the light of the moon.  This quieting and stillness, listening to the inner callings, brings rich nourishment for my body, mind, spirit and heart.

Living in rhythm with the earth.

Living in rhythm with the seasons and passages of our lives.

This is our natural way of being, each and every one.

We’ve been taught to fight against the organic ways of the earth.  We’re well-armed to go to war with ourselves and everybody else with judgments, anger and fear.  We become blind to the beauty.  We disregard our connectedness.  We forget how to love.  And so readily leave our happiness behind.

A few years ago, I had a magical encounter in a wintery forest in Vermont.  Part of the experience is shared below in an excerpt from ‘Crystal Tapestry.’ 

This remembering still nourishes me, bringing alive the boundless magic and beauty so naturally woven in the extraordinary tapestry of life.

If we stop for just a moment, take a deep breath, take a closer look around, it’s all right here, just waiting to be found.

When I stopped beside a creek to breath in the deep woody silence, I noticed the thread of a spider’s web spun in a graceful arc between the branches of a cedar tree.  Each delicate fiber was lined with snowflakes.  Elaborate starry crystals of all different sizes and shapes gathered along a shimmering thread.

Enchanted by this discovery, I looked around with heightened awareness and more discerning eyes to find the woods filled with snowy spider webs.

There were sparkling threads strung from broad cedar branches to the tips of the neighboring pines.

There were glittering fibers dangling around the spindly bushes beside the icy creek.

There were ornate strings of tiny snowflakes stretching all the way across the path, crystalline fibers reaching out and connecting tree to tree to tree to tree.

I reached out with shimmering fibers like those among the trees, connecting heart to heart to heart to heart.

ThanksGiving

She hiked along the deer trail, looking forward to seeing her old friend.  High on the mountain ridge, Jessie sat down among the gnarled tree roots winding serpent-like through the red clay and rocks.  She leaned back against the peeling bark of the juniper’s trunk, nestling into the welcoming embrace of the ancient tree.  Jessie closed her eyes, soaking up the warmth of the sun as her mind wandered off into the events of the past week.

“It’s been awhile since I’ve seen you.”  The juniper tree’s voice awakened Jessie from her hazy rehashing of days gone by.

“I’ve been so busy,” Jessie explained, “running around getting ready for the holidays.  I’m exhausted.  And it’s not even Thanksgiving yet.”

“Set aside your worries,” said the old tree.  “ThanksGiving is already here.  You’ll see.  Just take a look around.”

Jessie looked out toward the western horizon, spotting deer in a distant meadow, not exactly sure what she was supposed to be looking for.  “You celebrate Thanksgiving out here?” she finally asked.

“Always have.  Always will,” replied the juniper tree.  “Every day, as a matter of fact.  Gift giving and receiving.  Thanks giving and receiving.  It’s all here in the circle of life.”

“Well, where I come from,” said the woman to the tree, “the giving of gifts and the giving of thanks are scheduled holiday events.  It’s supposed to be meaningful and merry.  But the funny thing is,” she leaned in closer to the tree, lowering her voice to reveal a long-held secret, “everybody seems pretty stressed.”

“Take a deep breath,” invited the tree.  “And take another look around.  This time, listen with every cell of your being.  Feel through the eyes of your heart.”  

Jessie sighed and leaned back into the juniper’s trunk.  She gently touched the ground, feeling the warmth of the sun held in the soil and emanating from the rocks.  She watched a flock of speckled birds fly from tree to tree feasting on plump juniper berries.  Jessie heard the tree’s whispers floating by on the winds:

“Giving and receiving are vibrant rivers of energy,
open and flowing and circling around from one to another and back.

Unconditional giving, not an ounce of hesitation.  
Boundless receiving, welcoming the gifts.
Filling and flowing with gratitude and love.
That’s how we weave the web of life.”

Jessie sat quietly, pondering awhile.  Then she turned once again to face the juniper tree.  “That seems so easy out here,” the woman confided, “with you and the birds, the sun and blue sky.  But do you really think people can do this?”

The woman felt a sudden underground tremor.  The powerful quaking moved through the juniper’s roots and up through the branches which shivered and shook, showering the woman with needles and berries.  Ravens cackled and cawed, joining the contagious vibration of the juniper’s laughter rippling along the high mountain ridge.

“People can do this!” the tree chuckled.  “You’re part of the web of life.”

“Oh, yeah,” Jessie giggled, “I almost forgot.”  

The woman and the tree, side by side on the ridge, rooted deep in the earth and warmed by the sun, flourished in the sharing of their joy.

When the sunset painted the sky purple and red, Jessie understood it was time to hike down the deer trail and back over the mountain ridge.  She stood up and brushed spiky green needles from her hair and blue juniper berries from her lap, sharing with the earth the nourishments given by the elder tree.  

Reaching into the woven bag she carried, Jessie found the handful of shimmery pebbles she’d collected earlier that day.  She gently placed the stones on the gnarled roots of the ancient tree before continuing on her way.

FINDING OUR WAY HOME

Our physical homes and how we construct them, the ways we relate with our bodies and our planet earth, are revealing reflections of the inner landscapes we carry around inside. 

What would it be like to create a world in which home is an undeniable birthright?  Home always being a safe and sacred space where love and nourishment are guaranteed to be shared with equity among everyone living there.  Homes always being built with respect for the land and waters, in balance with the sun and seasons, in relationship with the animals and birds and all those in our human tribe.

What if we lived in a world in which everyone had a home?  No haves and have-nots.  No mortgage debts required.  No homeless shelters, orphanages or refugee camps. 

Can you imagine?  If we can picture it or feel it or even begin to have a taste, we are already bringing the dream to life.

In so many people’s lives, I am hearing stories of significant change.  In relationships.  Jobs and finances.  Birthings and deaths of beloveds.  Hunting for home.  In the passage of moving from what-has-been into something new, we often feel lost, alone, afraid and confused. 

Coming home to the truths we carry inside – about who we really are and why we are here – is fertile grounding, a solid foundation to root ourselves in while moving through change and encountering unknowns.

Our homing instincts are trusted guides when we listen to what’s inside the heartfelt yearnings to feel at home.  With open eyes and open hearts, we can see possibilities beyond the old patterns and fears.  We awaken and reach toward what is genuine.  Just imagine the lives we’ll live and the world we’ll create from that kind of inner space, building from the inside out with clear vision and self-awareness, acceptance, connectedness and purposeful choosing.

Finding our way home to our natural way of being.  To unconditional love for ourselves, each other and the earth.  To the passion and sheer joy readily shared in the dance with the circle of life. 

HOMING INSTINCTS (excerpt)

The Heron walked along the riverbank feeling lost in this strange land, the callings for home growing stronger inside her.  She dipped her long beak into the river for a soothing drink and noticed lights shimmering in the water. With her piercing gold eyes, she peered underwater to see where the light was coming from.  But the source didn’t seem to be there.  She raised up from the water and was surprised to discover three full moons glowing on the horizon.

The Blue Heron stood at the riverside reveling in the beauty of the moons. Without even thinking about it, she spontaneously started to hum, softly and discreetly at first.  Her humming grew louder, more colorful and creative, with lively rhythms and elaborate melodies.  The beautiful vibration kept growing and expanding until the heron’s radiant song could no longer be held back.

With joyful abandon, she sang out her blue heron song.  She passionately danced her blue heron dance, splashing in the river, leaving playful tracks along the shore.  She sang to the moons, celebrating mystical wildness.  She danced rhythms of peace to the tiny blue ants.  She sent waves of love to the emerald fish, honoring the extraordinary diversity of life.  She sang to the caterpillar she’d met on the hill, weaving her musical notes with fibers of trust in the potency of self-empowered change. 

And there inside the rhythm of her blue heron song, she felt whispers of sweet rememberings – soft rustling feathers, winds beneath her wings, earthy fragrances floating up from the lands far below. She stepped to the river’s edge, nodding to the moons’ reflections dancing on the flowing currents.  She gracefully opened her wings and lifted up into the air to fly. 

Blue Heron flew tirelessly for many days and many miles, following unseen pathways of the ancients and instinctual knowings she carried within. As she crossed the great waters, a formidable storm began to brew.  Heron soared with the winds racing in from the north.  She called out with gratitude to the showering rains.  Heron danced with the lightning and rolled with the thunder.

When the storm clouds passed by, she discovered just ahead countless herons filling the blue skies as far as she could see.  Blue Heron joined her flock, naturally weaving her way into the tapestry of undulating wings.

Dear Friends,

We are beginning to feel touches of Fall here in New Mexico as the shifting seasons move toward Autumn Equinox.  The invitation of the earth in this seasonal transition is to find balance in the midst of change, to discover the gifts in letting go with heartfelt honoring of all that has been.  

In celebration of the shifting seasons, here is an excerpt from a story about what I learned from a teacher in the Plant Nations who knows about dancing with change:

Touching the world of the tumbleweeds has allowed me to feel what it’s like to naturally embody change. These wild nomads of the desert readily transform and playfully tumble around in their dance with life and death, all according to their unique, ingenious design. Tumbleweeds know about rooting themselves only when and where it’s nourishing. And they intentionally move on from what-has-been when the cycle is complete, when that purpose has been served, honoring it all with their ease, lightness and quirky grace. Tumbleweeds have shown me how to call in the winds to let old attachments go.

ANT MEDICINE

In the beginning days of summer, a steady stream of ants decided to roam around in my house.  The ants found their way inside through barely noticeable cracks around the wooden door.  At first I just watched them, this flowing river of tiny bodies walking vertically up the adobe walls, traveling very long distances across the kitchen on all those tiny legs.  I couldn’t really tell what they were heading toward or exactly what they had found.  But the ants just kept on coming with unstoppable momentum, a collaboration among countless individuals, seeking something apparently so nourishing for them.

Truth is, I admired them – their creative tenacity and communal spirit.  Yet the ant population kept growing and adopting more and more of my home.  So I tried every natural remedy I could conjure up to deter the ants: chili powder, baking soda, vinegar, ointments with essential oils.  I placed delectable treats near the anthills hoping to redirect their attention toward an outdoor feast.  This was effective, but just momentarily.  Soon, very very soon, the ants would begin their trek back across the land to the house.  Boldly bypassing the deterrents I’d set in their paths, the ants would find an invisible (to me) crack around the door frame, sometimes six-feet off the ground.  Crawling around the door and crossing over the threshold, without a hint of hesitation, the ants continued on their way with their passionate quests.

This went on for weeks, this game between us.  My efforts felt futile.  I thought the ants would never stop their journeys into my house. 

One day, following sweet inspiration, I wrote about the ants and all I admired about them.  A few days later I talked with friends about the medicine of these ants, my intrigue and respect for what they were teaching me:

~ about boldness and tenacity

~ about passionately pursuing what is truly nourishing for you and all your beloveds

~ about skillful collaboration and interactive communication

~ about keeping on keeping on, no matter how much someone or something else tries to deter you

~ about sensing beyond what’s seen with the eyes

~ and sharing openly what it is that we love about each other, whether we’re of the same species or not

And suddenly I noticed the quieting.  There was a stillness in my house.  The ants were no longer coming inside.  I guess they realized I was finally really listening.
