Autumn Equinox marks a turning of the seasons on the earth, a transition from the full blossomings of summer into the quieting and letting go’s of fall.
The energies of the Equinox are about balance. A dynamic and interactive balance found while everything is in motion – relating and sharing, living and dying and birthing and growing, moving with the flow of natural cycles and seasons and time. Balance comes alive in the spiraling dance of change.
During the Spring Equinox, I camped in Chaco Canyon in the desert mesas of New Mexico. There was extraordinary magic in my time among the red rocks, the land spirits, and the enduring lineage of ancient peoples who once lived there. I spent most of two days sitting in a rock cave carving a ceremonial stone pipe.
On my way home from Chaco, I passed a field with horses. There was a newborn horse standing somewhat precariously on long skinny legs, just finding her feet, seeing the world from a brand new perspective with fresh wide-open eyes.
The little one was surrounded by a circle of six adult horses. Every one of the big horses was facing toward the little one, entirely focused on her. Flooding the newborn with their attention and caring. Vast knowings and curiosities openly exchanged in the flowing rivers of their connection and love.
And just a short distance beyond this circle of horses was another arc of adult horses facing toward the little one – unflinching, undistracted, unwavering in their attention aimed toward the newborn. Of all the things all these big horses could have been doing, they chose to honor this new life with unbridled passion, with their steady presence and loving regard.
This expansive love, the wide-open giving and receiving, was palpable far beyond the field in which the horses stood. The compelling energies emanated all the way inside my car, touching my heart, as I passed by on the road.
The ceremonial pipe carved in Chaco during our last Equinox has since been shared among circles of people. The Pipe carries the medicines of unconditional acceptance and love – the foundation for all life, the essential nourishment for building the bridge from the present to our future.
Awakening new dreams. Cherishing the birthings. Giving and receiving acceptance and love. Creating a new world filled with balance. Moment by moment. Breath by breath. Heart to heart.
Wishing you the blessings of Equinox.
Manaole U Manaole,
from my heart to the heart of mother earth to your heart,
